4th Tuesday, December, it was a beautiful sunny day, without any rain. A not so cold for a December month. The place is easily accessible! By walking 30 minutes from the center of Aarhus, you‘ll reach the biomedical university of Aarhus. You can also take the bus lines 2A or 45 and stop to Ekkoladen station. The place is close to the University IT Department and a startup incubator called INCUBA. The workshop is also close to a commercial center, with all commodities.

Open Space Aarhus is a non-profit organization started in 2010. The structure is made of a board of 7 elected persons, all members of the organization. Every meeting is open to everyone, with a report available on a public mailing-list freely available on internet [need the mailing list].

To be a member of the organization, one must pay 2.000dkk/months, 1.000dkk (if you’re a student). The place cost approximately 10.000dkk/month for the structure, and Open Space Aarhus doesn’t have any help from the government or the kommune. Being around 70 members is just enough to pay the rent! The makerspace has different sources of profit to reach financial sustainability. You can find a distributor of electronical tools, you can pay for some beverages from the freezer. When you become a member, you get a small space to keep your stuff in at the entrance of the building.

Open Space Aarhus is 200m2 large. This surface makes it the second largest shared space of Aarhus, the first one being close to the center of the city. The makerspace is open each Tuesday from 4pm to 10pm and many events are organized. For example, a large Christmas party is planned every year with all the members. Everyone has to buy a gift (less than 20$), and during the party, everyone put their gift on the table, and each member should try to get a package by rolling dice. Every 1st Tuesday of the month, a kind of small meetup is organized to share a technology or a project to other members of the structure, it is almost always an open event.

Open Space Aarhus contribute to MiniMakerfaire in Aarhus, this event takes place in DOKK1 public library. They also contribute to the Summer Hack in Copenhagen.

They need more members. They don’t feel like they have any best practices. Actually, Jens and some other persons in the makerspace want to write documentation to have more time for other projects. They also need better communication. They don’t have lot of social networks, only facebook and linkedin. Since a few months ago, they are trying to summarize every tuesday what people are doing in the space (called facebook update). They are members of the Maker of Denmark facebook group (need the link)
